On Friday, June 28, a beautiful event took place at the Family Preservation Center - the unveiling of a dedication plaque for the Shinnecock elders. This event was a part of the Shinnecock Elders/Caregiver Program, held in front of the Family Preservation Center beside a prominent tree.
The event was well-attended by various members of the community, including the elders from the program, young people from the Shinnecock cultural camp, and other members of the community. The ceremony served as a platform for the elders to share their experiences and stories about their life growing up on Shinnecock before the advent of paved roads and electricity.
We give a special thanks to Elder Marion Phillips for her visionary idea of the tree and the dedication plaque. Her contributions symbolize the respect and gratitude the community holds for the elders. This plaque serves as a lasting tribute to the Shinnecock elders, echoing their stories, wisdom, and cultural heritage.
